De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM 22.110.B: known problems

6 sourced reports, with what to check before you buy. Each one links to the page it was reported on.

Costly or dangerous

Bean grinder is a repeated failure point on the Magnifica S

The owner reports the grinder caused the machine to break down four times, and that after-sales service was hard to reach.

What to check. The grinder is the most-reported hard failure on this machine. If you buy one, expect that a grinder failure may require repair or replacement, and check local service availability before purchase.

Worth checking

Brew unit can jam against the grounds container (design change made)

The owner found the grounds container stuck and impossible to remove, and a forum repairer notes DeLonghi changed the brew unit and grounds container design for this issue.

What to check. The brew unit can hang on the rear edge of the grounds container and jam it, blocking removal. This is a known design weakness on this model, and DeLonghi revised the parts.

Brew-unit second press stops, producing weak coffee and broken pucks

After about 10 weeks the machine stopped doing the second press of the coffee puck, giving weak, less foamy coffee and pucks that broke apart when dropped.

What to check. The 'Nachpressung' (second tamp) failing is a symptom of the brew unit needing maintenance or lubrication. If your shots turn weak and pucks crumble, the brew group is the part to inspect.

Descale light triggers very early; no sensor, just a litre counter

The descale light came on twice in three weeks; the machine has no hardness sensor and just counts litres, with the factory hardness set to the hardest level 4.

What to check. Expect frequent descale prompts. Setting the water-hardness level to match your local water can reduce how often it asks, but the counter-based logic means it will still prompt regularly.

Plastic chassis screw-support breaks, stopping puck ejection

The plastic chassis piece that anchors the ejection lever's pivot broke, so used coffee pucks stopped ejecting into the tray.

What to check. The replacement part is cheap (~12€) but fixing it requires removing the whole body and disassembling the machine. A misaligned brew-unit piston was the root cause, so this can recur.

Water reservoir leaks when inserted

One owner reports the water tank leaks as soon as it is fitted, and got no response from DeLonghi customer service.

What to check. A leaking reservoir is a reported fault on this model, and the same review notes poor after-sales response. Check the tank seal early if you notice water around the base.
