Steam Deck OLED: known problems

4 sourced reports, with what to check before you buy. Each one links to the page it was reported on.

Costly or dangerous

Steam Deck OLED audio DSP topology load failure (kernel bug)

A Linux kernel patch description documenting that a driver change broke audio on the Steam Deck OLED, producing IPC timeouts and DSP topology load failures. This is a software-level audio failure specific to the OLED's AMD ACP audio hardware, later fixed by a kernel patch.

What to check. Audio failure on the OLED can stem from a kernel/driver regression rather than hardware; a system update or kernel fix resolves it.

Steam Deck OLED rapid battery drain and battery-health error in sleep

German owner forum thread describing an OLED that suddenly drains very fast in sleep with a game in the background and then reports a low battery-health state (46%) with an orange error in desktop mode, while the owner's LCD model holds charge normally. A power/battery reporting fault on the OLED.

What to check. Some OLED units drain rapidly in sleep and show a spurious low battery-health error; the owner initiated an RMA, so verify battery behavior before accepting a unit.

Worth checking

Steam Deck OLED intermittent Wi-Fi disconnection regression

A news report on Valve's SteamOS 3.7.10 beta fix for a Wi-Fi regression specific to the OLED model, which had caused intermittent disconnects during multiplayer and downloads. Fixed by software update, so the cost to a buyer is a buggy network experience until patched.

What to check. Wi-Fi dropping on the OLED was a known regression addressed by the SteamOS 3.7.10 update; keep the device updated before assuming a hardware fault.

Steam Deck OLED right thumbstick drift and deadzone fix

Owner forum thread where users report right thumbstick drift on the OLED, with fixes ranging from recalibration and deadzone adjustment to RMA or swapping in Hall-effect sticks. Drift is a real, owner-reported fault on this model.

What to check. If the right stick drifts, first recalibrate and raise the deadzone; if it persists, the OLED uses a distinct joystick part and replacement or RMA is the path.
